Rowrah 2013 Guest entry fee charge

Posted on July 22, 2013 at 7:05 PM

Hello to all entrants of Rowrah 2013

.

There will be a charge of £25 per person for guest drivers coming along and having a go on other peoples karts.

.

The reason for this is to help pay for the Rowrah weekend fees, if you went to a concession kart track there would be a cost of £20-£25. These charges are to cover any shortfall of costs in the future.

.

Hopefully these charges will help me bring down the cost of the 2015 event to early entries.

.

My goal will be a charge of £50 entry fee for the first 3 months of 2015 from 1st January to 31st March then it will go back to £65 entry then £85 for late entries

.

Regards Jim Coulthard

INVITATION TO THE KIMBOLTON MAXXIS TKM FESTIVAL 15TH AUGUST 2013

Posted on May 7, 2013 at 8:35 AM

.

From Alan Turney

HISTORIC KARTS ADD A TOUCH OF NOSTALGIA

TO KIMBOLTON’S MAXXIS TKM FESTIVAL.

.

Owners of historic karts are being invited to join in one of the UK’s top karting events - the Maxxis TKM Festival which celebrates its 15th year at Kimbolton in August.

With historic karts becoming more popular by the year and with both Tal-Ko and Kimbolton being trail-blazers in karting with histories going back to its birth more than 50 years ago, it is a perfect addition to this special celebration of TKM karting.

Any kart using a TKM or Hewland Arrow engine will be eligible to take part in what will be an on-track demonstration on Sunday, August 11. And under agreement with the MSA governing body, provided drivers use full safety wear and have kart racing experience, race licences will not be required.

Tal-Ko boss Alan Turney said: “This is great news. We started making TKM engines back in 1978 and it will be great to see some of the old models out on the circuit where they used to be raced many years ago.

“Over the past year or so interest in historic karts has been accelerating rapidly and we have been pleased to help those with older equipment by supplying spares which we still have on our shelves.”

The organisers are also hoping to encourage along drivers who used to race at the Kimbolton circuit over its 54 year history for a special reunion.

As usual the TKM Festival will be covered for Motors TV and the historics will be expected to appear as part of that adding a touch of nostalgia to the highly competitive nature of the annual event.

Says Martin Chesterman, Chairman of the Hunts Kart Club which runs Kimbolton: “This circuit has such a long history stretching back to the very earliest days of karting so it will be great to bring some old names and equipment back to the track.”

Drivers who would like to take part should send written requests with full details of the kart, engine and driver experience to [email protected]

Rowrah 2012 Classic Karting Weekend

By Dave Bewley

.

Rowrah’s 2012 Contingent

.

30 individual entrants enjoyed dry weather and even a few outbreaks of sunshine when Jim Coulthard organised the 8th Classic Kart Weekend at Rowrah in July.

.

Most entrants turned up with more than one kart so that we had around 50 machines in the paddock area, all displaying interesting characteristics. The weekend had been arranged so as to maximise track time with a total of 15 hours shared between two groups. Unsurprisingly by 4pm on Sunday afternoon, with a couple of hours still remaining, most participants decided that they’d had enough and packed away their machines ready for the journey home. Ron Smith is now a familiar face at Rowrah, bringing the 1962 Fastakart/Villiers that he’s owned from new. Instead of the Fastakart 77 adapted to take a Villiers motor, Ron’s son Steve was showing off a handsome looking 1974 Zip Espada/Suzuki T250. John Docker was part of another father and son outfi t, driving his recently acquired Zip 982/Parilla TT27 along with a Lane Aerospace/DAP T70. His son Philip was on the slightly older Zip 981/Hewland Arrow.

.

48 years ago, Eric Atkinson became Rowrah’s first junior club champion. He’d brought with him the Fastakart Featherweight/Montesa Impala which his elder brother Brian had purchased from Kelvin Hesketh back in 1964. “I once showed it to Barrie Williams whose father originally manufactured Fastakarts,” claimed Eric. “He didn’t recognise the kart at all, but by 1964, of course, Fastakart production had been taken over by two ex-employees Mel Bayliss and Bill Withers who designed a much lighter model than previously.”

.

Upon graduating from Juniors, Eric had taken up gearbox karting with a Super Shrike/Villiers. He could be seen casting a few wistful glances at the 1963 Shrike owned by Alastair Oakes who had brought it to Rowrah along with a 1988 Gillard/TKM. Alistair had taken the Villiers 8E3 engine out of a 1955 James Captain motorcycle and attached it to his Shrike chassis. Tim Field has become a collector of Hewland engines including the earlier models operating with a reduction gearbox and he enjoyed trying them out at Rowrah. The three Legends entries of Rob Logan, Cauley Leek and Keiron Hyslop attracted considerable attention from a group of bikers who had dropped in to see what all the noise was about.

Bob Reynolds and Shannon Gasson have attended all eight classic karting events at Rowrah. They’d both brought Blow Spitfi res that still looked good despite being over 45 years old. Apart from his usual 1968 Barlotti/Honda, Nick Purdie had everyone guessing about the identity of a space-frame/Villiers that appeared to be circa 1963. It was painted in the traditional maroon of a Buckler kart but didn’t fi t other characteristics of this famous old marque. Mike Todd used to be one of the top 100 International competitors at Rowrah and he was making a welcome return more than 35 years or so after his last outing on this circuit. Mike was driving an immaculate Mach1/Parilla and appeared to have lost none of his skill. His son Elliot also looked very rapid on a Zip Shadow/TKM. Also circulating very rapidly was Steve Strong with a 1980 Sisley Cobra/K88 once favoured by Johnny Herbert.

.

Jim Coulthard had put himself on a diet so that he could fit comfortably in the seat of his 1983 StratosXK2/PCR. After surmounting one or two mechanical problems early on he cut a dashing fi gure on the circuit. Wearing rather less well was Jim’s 1963 Buckler Gold Star chassis that needed a fair amount of restoration. “It’s been a pretty good weekend and I think everyone seems to have enjoyed it,” Jim exclaimed afterwards. “That’s always the most important thing from my point of view. We’ve actually emerged with a profit this time and the surplus will go towards next year’s event. It coincides with Rowrah’s 50th anniversary, so I’m definitely looking forward to that one.”
